Matthew Stevenson joined the Museum team in 2019 as an intern in our curatorial department. After graduating from Delaware State University in May 2020 with a degree in history, Matthew was hired by the Museum to be a Special Projects Assistant. In this role, he will conduct extensive initial research for the Digital Table on people, places, events and images that are important to the African American experience in South Carolina.
Outside of work, Matthew enjoys reading history books, playing basketball and golf, and spending time with his family, who live in Charleston and operate a bed and breakfast downtown. He has also recently taken a great interest in martial arts.
On illuminating African American journeys through his work at the Museum, Matthew says, “Charleston is ground zero for the African American journey, and as a young African American man, I make it my duty to be a voice and role model in my community and never let the stories of my ancestors go unheard.“
