The “Transforming Public History Conference” Starts June 14th.

Hosted by the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture, the Carolina Lowcountry and the Atlantic World Program (CLAW), the Addlestone Library, and the Race and Social Justice Initiative at the College of Charleston the “Transforming Public History from Charleston to the Atlantic World” conference will be held at the College of Charleston, June 14-17, 2017. The conference aims to address issues surrounding the interpretation, preservation, memorialization, commemoration, and public application of major themes in local, regional, and Atlantic World history.

Some of the speakers 2017 include Reconstruction expert Michael Allen,  cultural historian and a Professor of History at Howard University Ana Lucia Aroujo, Rutgers University Department of Landscape Architecture Instructor Anita Bakshi, University of Minnesota Libraries Umbra Search Digitization and Metadata Lead Dorothy J. Berry, Cultural History Interpreter Sara Daise, and the leader of Charleston’s Chapter of Showing Up for Racial Justice, Paul Garbarini, just to name a few. The Keynote Speaker will be historian, author, curator and educator, Lonnie G. Bunch, III, founding director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture.
