National Geographic: Charleston’s newest museum reckons with the city’s role in the slave trade

Charleston, South Carolina, known for its historic charm and culinary delights, has added a significant cultural institution to its landscape—the International African American Museum (IAAM). Situated on Gadsden’s Wharf, once the largest slave auction site in the US from 1772-1808, the sleek, modern building has just opened to much acclaim. The museum’s inauguration on June 27, 2023, was graced by notable figures, including former Cosby Show actress and Howard University dean Phylicia Rashad, as well as virtual remarks from the Obamas. With over two decades of planning, IAAM is now ready to welcome visitors from all over the world, inviting them to experience the interconnected emotions of trauma and joy within its exhibitions.
