The International African American Museum found its home in Charleston, South Carolina, specifically at Gadsden’s Wharf, a significant location in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Charleston served as the largest port for this trade in North America. The museum opened on June 27, 2023, symbolizing the importance of Charleston in the history of slavery in America. Approximately 150,000 enslaved Africans, accounting for 40% of all those brought to North America, arrived through Charleston Harbor. The museum’s establishment in this location highlights the crucial role Charleston played in shaping the history and legacy of slavery in the United States.
