According to multiple reports, one of Charleston’s most iconic residents and businessmen passed away on November 22nd. Anthony Wright, known to Holy City citizens as Tony the Peanut man, was a staple in area events. From parades to sporting events, Tony was known for his charismatic personality, his infectious smile, and the delicious peanuts he sold.
Since 1997, Tony has been a regular fixture at Charleston Riverdogs games where he would sing his famous “Peanut Man” jingle: “Hey, hey, what I say, I got some boiled, got some toasted, got some stewed, got some roasted!”
Many area residents have their own Tony the Peanut man story as he was quick to interact with anyone within arms reach. With that in mind, we reached out to a few of our Board Members to get some of their thoughts on his passing.
From Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg:
“Tony the Peanut Man was a Charleston legend, not just for his delicious peanuts, but mostly for his infectious joy. At community events and RiverDogs games he brought smiles to our faces while he sang and danced his way into our families and hearts.”
From Dr. Benard Powers:
“Tony really embodied some fo the best virtues that one sees in the city. He was always very positive and uplifting. That what it was about for him. He helped people see the best in themselves and other. He will be sadly missed as a fixture in the city.”
With the passing of Tony, Charleston has lost one of it’s prized gems. Our condolences go out to his family and friends.
