The newly opened International African-American Museum in Charleston, South Carolina, stands as a powerful testament to resilience. The museum is not your typical tourist attraction, as it is situated on the historically significant Gadsden’s Wharf, where almost half of all enslaved Africans arrived in the United States. During its construction, the museum’s team discovered the outline of a former building, believed to be one of the main storehouses where captured Africans were held while awaiting their sale. The museum’s chief learning and engagement officer, Malika Pryor, highlights this poignant connection to the past, underscoring the museum’s deep significance and historical importance.
