In this short video, Judy Russell (The Legal Genealogist) talked about slavery in the Northern British American Colonies and in the Northern States during the early decades of the United States Republic.
Did you know that New Jersey was the last northern state to emancipate its enslaved people? That enslaved people appeared on the 1850 Slave Schedule in New Jersey? Or that the Northern States also had Black Codes, which restricted the freedom of Free African Americans in the North?
Judy will take you on a short whirlwind tour of Northern slavery, history, and slavery-related records that can be found in the Northern States.
