In this historic moment of change, how else can Americans elevate the African American experience to build a better future?

Louise Thompson Patterson:

Pivotal figure in 20th century African American social activism, spanning labor, civil rights, and the early feminist movement.
She was one of the first African American women to enroll at University of California at Berkeley.
Through her involvement the Harlem Renaissance and vocal protest against McCarthyism, Patterson left behind an expansive legacy of fighting for justice.

Katherine Johnson:

Johnson was credited for her historical role as one of the first African American mathematicians to work as a NASA scientist.
She played a key role in NASA’s space program and was so reliable in her calculations, they asked her to check the math on the first computer-calculated orbit of the Earth by John Glenn for the Friendship 7 mission.
The movie Hidden Figures was made in tribute to her accomplishments and she was given a Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Obama in 2015.

Coretta Scott-King:

The wife and strong partner to Dr. King in his activism and played a critical role in the civil rights movement.
She carried on Dr. King’s work after his assassination, founding The King Center, leading the effort to establish Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and campaigning for gender equity, economic justice, the anti-Apartheid movement and nonviolent activism.

Myrlie Evers-Williams:

Fought for civil rights alongside her husband Medgar Evers, facing violence and death threats in response to their activism.
Evers-Williams spent more than 30 years seeking justice, and continuing her civil rights work, serving as chairwoman of the NAACP.

Alice Childress:

Lauded as "the only African-American woman to have written, produced, and published plays for four decades,” including Gullah, Moms: A Praise Play for a Black Comedienne, and Mojo: A Black Love Story.
In her plays, Childress confronted racism within the theater industry in her work and played a vital role in forming a union for off-Broadway actors.

Esther Cooper Jackson:

A civil rights activist, former social worker.
Along with Shirley Graham Du Bois, W. E. B. Du Bois, Edward Strong, and Louis E. Burnham, one of the founding editors of the magazine Freedomways, a theoretical, political and literary journal published from 1961 to 1985.
