Ginny Deerin is Major Gifts Officer at the International African American Museum. Prior to this appointment she was co-founder of Boomy, a company providing consulting services in the areas of fundraising, marketing and non-profit management.
Ginny was a co-founder of Project XX, a non-profit focused on encouraging women to run for office. To walk the talk, she ran for South Carolina Secretary of State in 2014 and then for Mayor of the City of Charleston in 2015. Even though Ginny was not elected for either office, her candidacies were considered game changers.
The accomplishment Ginny is most proud of is the founding of Wings for Kids in 1996. WINGS develops field-tested strategies, practices and materials that help afterschool programs become more effective by incorporating social and emotional learning. It has become nationally recognized as one of the most effective youth programs in the country. The program is now in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and California.
Before WINGS, Ginny’s professional life was divided into 10 years of working in marketing and 10 years in fundraising. During these 20 years, she provided leadership and assistance to dozens of political campaigns – from statewide to local. Ginny worked for Rawle-Murdy Associates, a full service marketing company in Charleston; when she left she was Vice President of the firm. In the late 80s, Ginny’s career turned to professional fundraising. She worked at the College of William and Mary in Virginia, the Medical University of South Carolina and The Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina.
Ginny grew up in Washington, DC. She has been living in Charleston most of her adult life. She is a graduate of the University of South Carolina. Ginny has a daughter, a son, daughter-in-law and two grandsons.
