IAAM CEO Among Distinguished South Carolina State University Panelists

Dr. Tonya M. Matthews, President and CEO of the International African American Museum (IAAM) will join distinguished panelists Dr. Porchia Moore, critical race theorist and professor of Museum Studies at the University of Florida, and Zaire McPhearson, South Carolina State University alumna, artist, educator and recent graduate of the Masters in Fine Arts program at Duke University, to discuss how museums shape American culture. 

This is the fourth event in the dynamic series “On Being a Citizen: The Role of Museums & Public Education.”
The event offers a discussion and assessment of how museums help grant access to educational resources for American citizens and how they shape and impact and political, social and cultural issues confronting American society. 

The panel is sponsored by the I.P Stanback Museum & Planetarium and South Carolina State University’s Department of Social Services. Director of the I.P Stanback Museum & Planetarium,  Dr. Frank C. Martin, II will moderate the conversation. 

During the exploration of identity, panelists will consider their own relationship to museums and other institutions of higher learning as it relates to their career choices, in addition to the museum’s role and relationship to socio, economic and political issues in America and across the world. Issues of identity, the significance of public educational access, and awareness of local, national, international and African diasporic cultural resources will be explored.
