International African American Museum to Host Second Film Screening of “Liberty Hill: An Unpolished Jewel” Due to Popular Demand

Charleston, S.C. – Following an overwhelmingly positive response to its premiere film screening during Black History Month earlier this year, the International African American Museum (IAAM) is pleased to host a second opportunity to view the powerful documentary, “Liberty Hill: An Unpolished Jewel.” The film will be screened on Friday, April 18 from 5:30PM to 8:00PM.

“Liberty Hill: An Unpolished Jewel” shines a spotlight on the storied past and promising future of Liberty Hill, a historic neighborhood in North Charleston, South Carolina, founded in 1871 by four freedmen. Once a beacon of self-reliance with nearly 60 thriving businesses, the community began to decline following the 1990s closure of the Charleston Naval Base and Shipyard. Today, Liberty Hill faces challenges such as vacant lots, shuttered storefronts, and aging homes all in need of repair. Yet, amidst these struggles, the documentary reveals a determined community working tirelessly to reclaim its vibrancy and preserve its rich legacy for future generations. 

This second film screening provides another chance for the public to engage with this important piece of local South Carolina history, which aligns with IAAM’s mission to honor the untold stories of the African American journey.

Brian Sheffey, IAAM’s Director of the Center for Family History, emphasizes the importance of such documentaries, stating, “African American documentaries like ‘Liberty Hill: An Unpolished Jewel’ are vital because they give voice to the untold stories of Black communities often overlooked by mainstream narratives. They shine a light on the resilience, struggles, and triumphs of Black families and communities, not just in the past, but in their present-day battles for justice and equality.”

“Films like these are crucial in preserving history, fostering understanding, and inspiring future generations to continue the fight for empowerment and change,” said Sheffey.

Tickets for the second screening of “Liberty Hill: An Unpolished Jewel” are $10 and can be purchased through the IAAM website. 

Due to anticipated demand, interested attendees are encouraged to secure their tickets in advance.
