International African American Museum Presents “Women of the Diaspora” Featuring Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie and Kenya Dunn

Charleston, S.C. — On Thursday, March 27, the International African American Museum (IAAM) will host “Women of the Diaspora,” a dynamic program honoring the remarkable achievements of women with African descent. For this year’s Women’s History Month, IAAM will host a dynamic conversation featuring Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie, the first woman elected Bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, and Kenya Dunn, entrepreneur and founder of The Power-Filled Woman.

Bishop McKenzie will engage in a powerful, insightful conversation with Dunn who will dive into themes of faith, perseverance, and empathy, as both women reflect on their groundbreaking journeys and the vital importance of empowering young women to lead with authenticity and purpose.

Dunn’s dedication to fostering transformational success and Bishop McKenzie’s visionary leadership will create a unique and inspiring dialogue, redefining leadership and illuminating pathways for the next generation. Attendees will have the opportunity to witness a profound exchange celebrating resilience, community, and the indomitable strength of women who are shaping both history and the future.

“During Women’s History Month, we celebrate the contributions of African American women who have shaped both the United States and the world through their brilliance, courage, and character,” said Malika Pryor, IAAM’s Chief Learning and Engagement Officer. “From Harriet Tubman to Shirley Chisholm, Ida B. Wells to Mae C. Jemison: These barrier-breaking women have shattered glass ceilings and age-old stereotypes with tenacity and conviction.”

“African American women have led movements for justice, advanced science and medicine, and transformed our culture through the arts,” said Pryor. “No matter the adversity or the adversary, they’ve risen to the challenge, paving the way for future generations. And they do this not just for little girls who share their hue, but for us all. Indeed, Black girl magic is real and so too are the women who make it.”
