Charleston, S.C. — Join the International African American Museum (IAAM) at the historic Mother Emanuel AME Church for a powerful evening celebrating the rich heritage and enduring legacy of African American culture. “Awakening of the Ancestors” is a two-part series of both music, featuring the Fisk Jubilee Singers, and a masterclass with the choir’s director, Dr. G. Preston Wilson, Jr.
The singers will perform Sunday, February 16, 2025, from 6:00PM to 8:00PM at Mother Emanuel AME and the masterclass featuring Wilson will take place on Monday, February 17, 2025, 11:00AM to 12:00PM at the IAAM.
“Awakening of The Ancestors Through Music” is an enriching experience that celebrates and honors the voices of our ancestors, reminding us of the rich history that shapes our present and inspires our future. This annual Black History program is free to the public and will feature the Fisk Jubilee Singers, one of the most legendary and iconic ensembles in American music history.
Founded in 1871, the Fisk Jubilee Singers are renowned for their soulful performances of African American spirituals, which helped preserve and popularize this deeply significant genre. Their unique sound and powerful storytelling have transcended generations, making them a symbol of resilience, cultural pride, and artistic excellence.
Troy McClain, IAAM Faith-Based Programs Manager stated, “This is an amazing opportunity for the Charleston community. With over 150 years of artistic expression and storytelling inherent in African American spirituals, attendees are in for a treat with this performance and the masterclass.”
Come experience a curated selection of songs and engage with insightful commentary on the importance of spirituals in the African American experience, as we celebrate the echoes of the past that continue to shape our path toward a harmonious future. ______________________________________________________________________________
