Young Griots: Wrapped in Heritage | The Beauty & Meaning of African Headwraps

  • Program
Free

This June, the International African American Museum is Celebrating a Century of Black Beauty — honoring the styles, symbols, and stories that have shaped beauty across the African American and African diasporic experience. From cultural adornment to expressions of identity and resistance, beauty has long served as a powerful form of storytelling and pride.

As part of this celebration, Wrapped in Heritage is a special Young Griots offering that welcomes individuals of all ages to explore the cultural significance and artistry of African headwrapping. Led by Bukola Olalere—creative designer and founder of Bukkie’s Apparel — this hands-on workshop shares the history behind headwraps and guides participants through a signature wrapping style that blends beauty, culture, and technique.

Each participant will receive a headwrap to use during the session and take home as part of their experience.Whether you’re honoring your heritage, exploring a new tradition, or simply curious, this workshop provides a welcoming space for all experience levels to celebrate identity, culture, and the enduring elegance of African headwrapping.

First come, first served. Seating is included with Museum admission.
