Researching African American Ancestry Using U.S. Colored Troops (USCT) Pension Applications (Panel)

  • Center for Family History

The United States Colored Troops (USCT) were African American military units that served during the Civil War. The USCT played a significant role in the Union Army and was instrumental in securing victory for the North. This session will share how researching the USCT Pension Application Files can provide valuable information for those interested in African American genealogy and military history.

The IAAM is adding hundreds of USCT Pension Applications to its free, online archives. This project is part of a 3-year project that is building the largest free and publicly available archive of full USCT pension files. You can access these files via https://tinyurl.com/USCTAppsCFH.

Panelists: Angela Walton-Raji, Bernice Bennett, Darius Brown, and Richard Condon
