Summer Film Series: Wilmington on Fire

$10
As part of our Summer Film Series, the International African American Museum (IAAM) is proud to present the compelling documentary Wilmington on Fire. This series, in partnership with the AfroSouth Film Festival, aims to provide a platform for local filmmakers whose works explore topics from throughout the Low-country and the global African diaspora. The theme for this series, ‘Young Black & Boundless’, highlights and encourages young filmmakers to share their stories and perspectives.

On Thursday, May 8, 2025, join us for an outdoor screening of Wilmington on Fire in the African Ancestors Memorial Garden. This documentary uncovers the largely hidden history of the 1898 Wilmington Massacre, where an armed mob of white supremacists attacked Black communities in North Carolina, resulting in hundreds of deaths and thousands fleeing the city.

Through rare photographs, historical research, and testimonies from descendants of the victims, the film reveals the deep roots of white supremacy in the post-Reconstruction South and its lasting impact on America’s political landscape.
