Summer Film Series: A Tree Story

$10
As part of our Summer Film Series, the International African American Museum (IAAM) is proud to present A Tree Story, a powerful documentary exploring the fight to preserve land, culture, and history on Johns Island.

This series, in partnership with the AfroSouth Film Festival, aims to uplift stories from the Low-country and the global African diaspora through the lens of local filmmakers. On Thursday, June 5, 2025, join us for an outdoor screening of A Tree Story in the African Ancestors Memorial Garden.

This documentary sheds light on the urgent struggle of Johns Islanders to protect their ancestral land from the pressures of overdevelopment and climate change-induced sea level rise. The film weaves their stories with the fight to save the Angel Oak, a centuries-old live oak tree standing on a former plantation—symbolizing resilience, history, and the community’s deep-rooted connection to the land.

Following the screening, guests are invited to stay for a brief talk-back to reflect on the themes of land preservation, environmental justice, and cultural heritage.
