In 2010, Joseph McGill, a historic preservationist and Civil War re-enactor, founded the Slave Dwelling Project. Since the founding of the project, McGill has traveled the country spending the night in former slave dwellings, providing a unique way of understanding the often obscured and distorted history of slavery. In 2023, Joseph McGill and Herb Frazier published Sleeping with the Ancestors: How I Followed the Footprints of Slavery where McGill provides reflection and discussion on his experiences visiting historic sites across the nation and delves into the true history of each location.Together, Joseph McGill and Herb Frazier immerse readers into the history of slavery and the ignored aspects of the history surrounding slavery. Please join IAAM’s Education Department on Thursday,January 11th, 2024 for a discussion with the authors of Sleeping with the Ancestors.
