From Cotton to Courage: Writing Poetry for Resilience & Change

  • Program
$10

Calling all poets — whether emerging, seasoned, or somewhere in between! Join Charleston’s first Poet Laureate and South Carolina Hall of Fame inductee, Marcus Amaker, for a transformative poetry workshop inspired by the life and legacy of Eartha Kitt. This workshop will provide participants with the opportunity to explore their own stories of resilience, self-discovery, and advocacy through the powerful medium of poetry.

Drawing on Kitt’s journey from a South Carolina cotton field to becoming an international icon and outspoken advocate for civil rights, Marcus will guide you in using poetry as a tool for personal reflection and creative expression. The workshop follows An Evening of Poetry & Music, where Marcus will serve as Griot (storyteller), weaving poetic reflections around Eartha Kitt’s legacy of resistance and resilience.

Whether you are an experienced poet or a newcomer, this session will offer a space to discover your voice and find inspiration for change!
