Echoes of the South | An Evening of Music & Conversation (Unsettled Things Exhibition Opening)

  • Program

Join us for an unforgettable evening of music and conversation celebrating the opening of Unsettled Things: Art from an African American South at the International African American Museum (IAAM). Largely drawn from the permanent collection at the University of North Carolina’s Ackland Museum, this remarkable exhibition features forty-four dynamic works by twenty-eight artists from the southern United States, including Thornton Dial, Lonnie B. Holley, Nellie Mae Rowe, and Mose Tolliver.

Guests will enjoy an exclusive early viewing of the exhibition, followed by a captivating program led by two-time Grammy Award-winning singer Quiana Parler, a member of the Grammy Award-winning group Ranky Tanky. Quiana will explore themes of art, craftsmanship, and storytelling in the South, alongside powerful performances by storyteller and South Carolina native Ann Caldwell, and luthier Anthony Walker, representing Southpaw Cigar Box Guitars. Together, they will illuminate the connections between the artwork and the rich cultural and spiritual traditions of the African American South.

This evening offers a unique chance to engage with the exhibition’s themes, providing insight into the creative processes and lived experiences behind these exceptional works of art.

This program is made possible through the generous support of Bank of America.
