An Evening of Poetry & Music | Honoring the Legacy of Eartha Kitt

  • Program
$10

On February 13, join us at the International African American Museum (IAAM) for An Evening of Poetry & Music, as we honor the groundbreaking legacy of Eartha Kitt – actress, singer, and tireless activist. Kitt’s journey from a South Carolina cotton field to international stardom was marked by courage, resilience, and a fierce commitment to social justice, becoming an outspoken advocate for civil rights.

The evening will feature South Carolina native Sandhi Santini’s EARTHA From Cotton To Caviar, a powerful one-woman show that takes us through Kitt’s life, struggles, and triumphs. With a mix of dramatic narration, live music, and projected visuals, Santini’s performance paints a vivid portrait of Kitt’s enduring legacy, punctuated by ten of her signature international hits. Music will be provided by an interactive trio led by music director Marco di Gennaro.

Former Charleston Poet Laureate Marcus Amaker will also join us, serving as Griot (storyteller) for the evening, weaving in poetic reflections between performances to deepen the evening’s themes of resistance, resilience, and the ongoing fight for civil rights.

Special Opportunity: Interested in finding your inner poet? Don’t miss Marcus Amaker’s poetry workshop on Saturday, February 15 at 11AM. Tickets are available here.
