2025 IAAM Sankofa Fellowship (Accepting Applications Feb 15-April 4)

Immerse. Engage. Transform. 

The International African American Museum (IAAM) invites rising juniors and seniors in college to apply for the 2025 Sankofa Fellowship—an 8-day immersive experience designed for students passionate about African American history, community-building, and cultural preservation. 

Dates: June 8–15, 2025
Location: Charleston, SC
Cost: IAAM provides meals and housing. Fellows are responsible for their travel to and from Charleston.

  • Hands-On Experience: Work on a real-world community storytelling project with Metanoia, a North Charleston-based nonprofit dedicated to neighborhood revitalization. 
  • Leadership & Professional Development: Learn from museum professionals and cultural leaders. 
  • Cultural Immersion: Explore Charleston’s deep African American history through site visits, museum tours, and interactive workshops. 
  • Capstone Project: Collaborate with peers to create a public-facing project preserving community narratives. 

What to Expect 

Sample Itinerary:
Day 1: Orientation & Cultural Context – Museum tour, history session, and welcome dinner.
Days 2–5: Community Outreach – Hands-on work with Metanoia, oral history workshops, and engagement with residents.
Day 6: Field Trip & Professional Development – Visit a historic site and participate in career-building workshops.
Day 7: Capstone & Celebration – Present your final project to museum staff and community members.
Day 8: Departure & Reflections – Closing ceremony and evaluations.
