Edward Logan Jr.Certificate of his freedomState of South CarolinaKnow all persons by these presents that the Bearer Edward (Logan) Junior is a free person of colour and a son of Edward and Lydia (Logan) also free persons of colour and a grandson of George who was also free and the son of Frank who was left his freedom for his faithful services by his master George Logan Esqr by his last Will and Testament in the year 1775 or thereabouts as will appear by a reference to his Will on Record in the proper office. The said Edward is now a resident in Charleston District – a Butcher by Trade – Witness my Hand at Charleston this 22nd November 1848.Wm. LoganGuardianState of South CarolinaCharleston DistrictPersonally appeared William Logan Esqr whose signature appears subscribed to the foregoing instrument of Writing and made Oath that he did sign his name to the same as Guardian of Edward Logan Junr a free man of colour.Wm. [Addendum in left margin of document, some text obscured] Charleston District… certify that Edward Logan Jr named in the within certificate , Personally appears before me and requests that the name of his mother Harriet might be placed in the [illegible] of Lydia Logan which has been done in his presence – Lydia being the name of his Grandmother.
